Like its predecessors, Watch Dogs Legion puts you in a big city play ground—near-future London this time around. London after Brexit, that is, so not too fictional nor too futuristic. You'll once again be joining notorious hacking group DedSec, recruiting regular citizens to the cause as you fight to take down a big private security firm that's got the city under it's thumb.
Legion brings a neat twist over past Watch Dogs games: every NPC character is a potential protagonist for you to recruit to your cause. Each comes with their own traits and skills that you can use before hopping into another member of your budding resistance movement. There are hacker grandmas and nanobee controllers and rugby fanatics all over the city who may be receptive to DedSec's cause.
Here's everything we know about Watch Dogs Legion's story, setting, and characters.
What is Watch Dogs Legion's release date?
Watch Dogs Legion released worldwide on October 29, 2020. The game was originally announced for a Fall 2019 release, but was pushed back to March 2020 and delayed further after that.
Watch Dogs Legion's main conceit of playing any citizen in the city gets off to a slow start, Chris says in his review, as some of his earliest recruits didn't feel worth getting fussed over. "Most of London's citizens are way too ordinary to be much fun, but the few I grew to care about wound up feeling more important to me than most videogame protagonists ever do. Not bad for a group of randomly generated misfits."
Watch Dogs Legion's story is set in post-Brexit London
Real-life London is already known for its heavy use of surveillance technology. Watch Dogs Legion's post-Brexit London is a whole new level of tech dystopia. Drones are now heavily integrated into society, some of which are basically flying cops, equipped with weapons and scanning for troublemakers at all times. A new private security company, Albion, has gained influence across the city. Blume, the evil tech super company from the last two games, still appears to be pulling the strings behind the scenes.
It turns out that, while Brexit might have informed some of the story or decisions Ubisoft made about the game, the choice of location was made before Brexit was all we could talk about. Before Brexit, things were already a little bleak. Surveillance has been a concern seemingly forever.
"We chose London as a setting before the Brexit debate was even happening," Watch Dogs Legion creative director Clint Hocking told PCGamesN, "and certainly before the vote."
