Tracy Walder discusses her book, The Unexpected Spy", at Politics and Prose.

Walder’s first job after college was with the CIA, where she worked as a staff operations officer at the agency’s Counterterrorism Center. In this engaging account, she describes monitoring al-Qaeda cells with drones, tracking chemical terrorists, debriefing prisoners who had vowed never to talk to a woman, and following terrorist trails through North Africa, Europe, and the Middle East to stop chemical attacks. She also saw a terror chart she’d compiled manipulated by White House staff to convey misleading information, and in her second position, as special agent at the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, she both helped capture one of the most notorious foreign spies ever caught in the U.S. and experienced rampant sexism. Walder is in conversation with Peter Bergen, CNN’s national security analyst and Vice President for Global Studies and Fellows at New America.

Tracy Walder is a former Staff Operations Officer (SOO) at the CIA's Counterterrorism Center and a Special Agent at the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office specializing in Chinese counterintelligence operations and has taught high-school history and government courses at Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas. Now Walder is the Board of Directors for Girl Security, a non profit, non partisan group that brings national security curriculum to girls in high school throughout the US.
